Kuningan – The Tenth Day of Galungan

One of the holiest days on the small tropical island. This day is the tenth days of Galungan, Balinese called it Kuningan.
 
Kuningan derives from the word ‘kuning’ that means Yellow in English, which represented yellowed rice. On this day, Balinese made special offerings with yellowed rice for the ancestor farewell on the last day of Galungan. On this day Balinese believe that the ancestor returns to their realm after visiting earth for celebrating Galungan.
 
The offerings with yellow riced have a symbol of humanity’s gratitude to the Gods for all life, happiness, wealth, health, and prosperity he gave. And also, they decorated the offerings with small shadow puppets that represented the angel who gave the joy and wealth to the earth.
Again, this day you may see Tamiang and Endongan hanging outside Balinese home and temple.
 
Tamiang is formed as a round, Tamiang means shield and has signification as protection. Tamiang reminds Balinese of the importance of the law of nature. It has a function as a reminder to humans about Karma, they should protect themselves from bad behavior to avoid Karma.
 
Endongan made from coconut leaves and shaped like a bag or pocket. Balinese put different things like seeds, fruits inside it. It symbolizes supplies. Balinese believe that the most important supply is knowledge and devotion.
 
Mostly, the Balinese celebrate Kuningan only with family at home, because there is no obligatory to pray in all of the temples in their village.
 
If you visited Bali when Kuningan, you will find Barong or ngelawang,  Barong and ngelawang are like lion creature, they will walk around the village followed by kids playing traditional music of Balinese, they will pass house per house, and people from the house will give offerings called canang with sesari (money) on it, after that, they will bless the house and the owner of the house and all his family.

The unique cremation ceremony of Bali

The last ceremony that should be done by Balinese Hindus in the human circle is the Ngaben ceremony. Ngaben ceremony is a cremation ritual to burn the deceased body to set it free from worldly ties and send it to the next life. Not only Ngaben, but Bali also has 3 names for this cremation ceremony. There are, Ngaben, Plebon, and Pretiwaan. Ngaben is a cremation ceremony for ordinary people, Plebon is for the royal family and Pretiwaan for the highest priest.

Galungan : the holiest day in Bali

Galungan is the most important day for the Balinese. According to history, Galungan is about the victory of dharma over adharma. Or we can say Balinese celebrating the victory of good over the evil. This celebration is also to give honor to the creation of the universe Ida Sang Hyang Widi .

Galungan is held twice a year, and always a Wednesday. But, if you are trying search in Georgian calendar you will not found it, because Balinese celebrate Galungan according to the Balinese calendar that only has 210 days per year. At Galungan the spirit of the ancestors go down to earth and come home to visit their family.

Tuesday before the d-day of Galungan, Balinese will erect Penjor to show their gratitude and hospitality to the ancestor as the house owner. If you have ever seen the regularly penjor, in this day you will see the amazing penjor with luxury decoration.

Penyekeban : The day to cover-up

Three days before Galungan day. Balinese will make an offering with fruits, but the most important fruit for them is banana because Balinese consider that Banana has the least ego, even though we cut it, it will grow and still gives the vulnerability of other creatures. Penyekeban has significance that human must reduce their ego so they can get closer with Ida Sang Hyang Widi.

Penyajaan : Time to make Balinese cake

Two days beforehand Galungan. Balinese will make traditional cake known as Jaja that are made from colorful fried rice that will complete the offerings. Penyajaan has the significance that humans can make something sweet that can be use in daily life.

Penampahan : The day of Sacrifice

The day before Galungan, this day Balinese will sacrifice a pig to be slaughtered. This day will be a big day for Balinese because they cook the good thing for tomorrow. Penampahan has the significance that human must kill their bad habit. In Bali, the pig is symbolized as laziness, so slaughter the pig has meant that human slaughter the laziness either. 

Galungan Day

The d-day, this day people will go to the temple and bring everything that they already made the days before. They will pray together and usually Balinese go back to their village to pray together with their family. This day women are seen carrying the offerings on their head.

The day After Galungan

This day Balinese will visit their close friend or visit their family.

Kuningan : The end of Galungan

The tenth day after Galungan, Balinese believe that this day the spirit of the ancestral will back to heaven. So, Balinese will make yellow rice offerings.

Celebrate Indonesia’s independence day : Merdeka !

Entering the month of August, you will probably notice the sudden splash of red and white displayed everywhere especially in the street. Formally, Indonesians usually celebrates the Independence Day the 17 august by doing flag ceremonies in schools and offices.  After the flag ceremonies, in some province the more informal celebrations start with carnival or parade. There will be so many people gathering with their unique costume and their creativity, they are mobilizing hundreds of performances and thousands of viewers as they process through City Street, concentrate the festive mood through spectacular display. Not only that, even the kindergarten children on decorated bikes, marching bands, and costume party with traditional themes.

Every year Bali always has something to show to the tourist. Besides all the religion unique ritual ceremony Bali has annual fun thing to do, it is Bali Kite Festival. This festival will be held between July and august or sometime through October, and you will see hundreds of competing kite troupes gather around to pilot their traditional kites. This festival is very unique, every year it has a thousand visitor watch it.

In daily life of Balinese, kite is the most favorite things to do by the children around the rice field, According to Hinduism the meaning of flying kite is dedicated to Rare Anggon. Rare Anggon  is a Hindu’s protector God of rice fields in Bali from the dangers of plant hopper and bird pests
